Japanese: ヒョウタンボク

Also known as 'Citrine'. A deciduous shrub of the Caprifoliaceae family. It grows in the mountains and fields of Hokkaido, Honshu, and Shikoku, and is commonly found on the Japan Sea coast. The leaves are opposite, oblong, and hairy. In May, flower stalks emerge from the leaf axils, and usually two flowers appear at the end. The corolla is tubular with five lobes at the end, white at first but yellow later. There are five long stamens. The fruits are spherical, borne in pairs, and ripen red in July to August. Poisonous. Used as a garden tree and bonsai. The closely related 'Oohyotanboku' grows in the lower alpine zone of central Honshu, with ovate, oblong, hairless leaves and whitish undersides. Yellowish-white flowers bloom in July. The fruits are lined up in pairs and ripen red in September.
