Guareschi, G.

…the protagonist of the Don Camillo series by the Italian popular writer Giovanni Guareschi (1908-68). Set in a rural village along the Po River during the chaotic period immediately following the Resistance during World War II, the story is full of laughter and tears, and tells of the friendship and respect shown to the two men, Don Camillo, a priest, and Peppone, a Communist village chief, who are both kind, cruel, and violent, but who always quarrel with each other.
