…Although all of the ancient Greek architectural works have been lost, the outline of their contents has been preserved to this day in a ten-volume treatise on architecture written around 30 BCE by the Roman architect Vitruvius, who was a 1st-century BCE architect. The three architects who served the tyrant Nero, Severus, Celer, and Rabirius, were known for their free and original ideas, and Apollodorus of Damascus, who served the emperors Trajan and Hadrian, was perhaps the greatest architect of the Roman Empire. Emperor Hadrian was himself a great architect, and is considered the actual designer of the Pantheon, the Temple of Venus and Rome, and Hadrian's Villa (Villa Adriana) at Tivoli. …
