Aru [Islands] - Aru
An archipelago in the Arafura Sea in eastern Indonesia. The five central islands are close to each other and separated by four narrow waterways. The land is low and covered with dense forest. The main island is Wokam, and the capital, Dobo, is a small island to the west. The nearby waters are famous for tortoiseshell and pearl oyster production. Japanese traders have also been harvesting pearl oysters since the 1880s. The population is mainly Papuan. The area is 8,563 km2 . The population is about 30,000.
