This echinoderm belongs to the Ophiuroidea family of the Ophiuroidea class. It is found from Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu to the Korea Strait, and lives by burrowing into the muddy bottom on the continental shelf. The disk is 0.8 cm in diameter and the arms are about 4 cm long. The disk is pale blue or pale vermilion, and the arms pale yellow. The surface of the disk is covered with small scales. It extends its arms out of the mud and shakes them in the water, secreting mucus from its tube feet to collect plankton in the sea and bring it to its mouth. It also eats organic matter that has accumulated on the seabed, attaching it to its tube feet. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
