Pugin, Augustus Welby Northmore
Born: March 1, 1812, London
Died: September 14, 1852. Ramsgate. British architect, designer, and writer. Succeeding his father A. Pugin (1762-1832), he was known as a researcher of medieval Christian architecture and a Gothic Revival architect. He worked on the design of the New Palace of Westminster with C. Barry and J. Graham. He also assisted Barry, who won the design competition for the Houses of Parliament, and was in charge of designing the Perpendicular Gothic details. In 1836 he published his representative work, Contrasts, in which he regarded the Middle Ages as a model for modern times and advocated their revival in modern times. His works include St. Giles' Cathedral (1841-46) and St. Augustine's Cathedral (1846-51). His books include The True Principles of Pointed or Christian Architecture (41).
