A French nobleman (marquis) who inherited and developed the treatment of illnesses based on the theory of animal magnetism, which was founded by FA Mesmer. Born into one of the most prestigious families, while serving as a soldier, he also conducted treatments in Buzancy near his castle in Soissons, which attracted many patients, and his mass treatments using "magnetized" elm wood and his public experiments in Paris with one of his patients, Victor Race, were particularly well-received. He also worked to popularize magnetic therapy through the establishment of the Society of Harmony of Fellows in Strasbourg, where he was on military duty, and through his writings such as Memoirs for the Establishment and History of Animal Magnetism (1784), and occupies a unique position in the history of dynamic psychiatry that is no less than that of Mesmer.

F.A.メスマーによって創唱された動物磁気説に基づく病気治療を継承･発展させたフランスの貴族(侯爵)。屈指の名門の出で，軍人として活動するかたわら，居城のあったソアソン近郊のビュザンシーで行った治療は多くの患者を集め，とりわけ“磁化された”ニレの木を用いた集団治療や，患者の一人ラースVictor Raceを使ったパリでの公開実験は大評判となった。また軍務でおもむいたストラスブールに設立した〈盟友調和協会〉や，《動物磁気の確立と歴史のための覚書》(1784)などの著作を通じて磁気治療術の普及に努め，力動精神医学史上メスマーに劣らない特異な地位を占める。
