1751‐1825 A French nobleman (marquis) who inherited and developed the treatment of illnesses based on the theory of animal magnetism, which was founded by FA Mesmer. Born into one of the most prestigious families, while serving as a soldier, he also conducted treatments in Buzancy near his castle in Soissons, which attracted many patients, and his mass treatments using "magnetized" elm wood and his public experiments in Paris with one of his patients, Victor Race, were particularly well-received. He also worked to popularize magnetic therapy through the establishment of the Society of Harmony of Fellows in Strasbourg, where he was on military duty, and through his writings such as Memoirs for the Establishment and History of Animal Magnetism (1784), and occupies a unique position in the history of dynamic psychiatry that is no less than that of Mesmer.
