Blue sedge - Blue sedge

A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family (APG classification: Cyperaceae). It is usually 10-20 cm tall, but some can reach 40 cm. It is called blue sedge because it is entirely green. It grows everywhere, including grasslands, hills, and roadsides, and is often divided into several varieties because of its large variation. Those that grow in sandy areas on the coast have long rhizomes and tough leaves, and are distinguished as beach blue sedge. It is found throughout Japan, and is distributed from Korea, China, the Himalayas to Australia.

カヤツリグサ科（APG分類：カヤツリグサ科）の多年草。高さは普通10～20センチメートルだが、40センチメートルになるものもある。全体が緑色をしているためアオスゲの名がある。草原、丘陵地、路傍など至る所に生え、変異が大きいため、いくつかの変種に分けられることもある。海岸の砂地に生えるものは根茎が長く伸び、葉が堅く、ハマアオスゲとして区別される。日本各地にみられ、朝鮮、中国、ヒマラヤからオーストラリアにかけて分布する。
