A general term for documents written in Linear B. The language used belongs to the Indo-European family. It was deciphered by Ventris in 1952, and contrary to previous expectations, it was confirmed to be Greek. Linear B was written on clay tablets and has been excavated from Knossos on the island of Crete, Pylos on the mainland, and Mycenae. As it is a syllabic script, the writing is often incomplete and some documents remain undeciphered. It belongs to the period between 1450 and 1200 BC, is close to the Arcadian dialect of the historical period, and in some ways conveys an older form than Homer. The contents of the documents are only inventories of assets, with no literature, and a small vocabulary. → Cretan writing/Mycenaean civilization

線文字Bによる文書の総称。使用されている言語はインド・ヨーロッパ語族に属する。1952年ベントリスによって解読され，それまでの予想に反してギリシア語であることが確認された。線文字Bは粘土板に書かれ，クレタ島のクノッソス，本土のピュロス，ミュケナイ等から出土。音節文字であるため表記は不完全の点が多く，未解読の文書も残る。前1450年から前1200年に属し，歴史時代のアルカディア方言に近く，ホメロスより古形を伝える面がある。文書の内容は財産目録の類のみで文学はなく，語彙(ごい)は少ない。→クレタ文字／ミュケナイ文明
