A former town in Izumi County in the northwest of Kagoshima Prefecture. Occupying the central Izumi Plain, it is prolific in rice, tobacco, seedlings, and mandarin oranges, and is also prosperous in beef cattle and poultry farming. Large-scale mechanized agriculture is carried out on the nationally reclaimed land along the Yatsushiro Sea coast. The Hisatsu Orange Railway runs through the town, and Araki is a migratory site for cranes (a special natural monument). In March 2006, it was incorporated into Noda Town, Izumi County, and Izumi City. 71.14 km2 . Population: 14,178 (2003).
