Japanese: 檜物師 - ひものし
Himonoshi - cypress craftsman

From around the 15th century, craftsmen made everyday items such as bent wood (magemono) and tsukurimono (tsukurimono). Magemono are made by bending thin cypress boards into a round shape and binding them with thin birch or cherry bark. They were also called hinokimono. In the 17th century, cedar and cypress were also used to make tsukurimono. Tsukurimono are made into square shapes using the bent wood technique. Those who specialize in bent wood are called magemono-shi. Those who are employed as resident craftsmen and who also sell their crafts are called hinokimono-ya (cypress goods store).
