Philocrates (English spelling)

Athenian statesman of ancient Greece. After the fall of Olynthus (348 BC), he headed a peace embassy to Philip II of Macedonia, which concluded a peace treaty and alliance with Macedonia in 346 BC. He then headed a second embassy to obtain Philip's signature, and returned to propose the implementation of the alliance despite opposition from Demosthenes. He then sent two more envoys to Philip. In 343 BC, however, he was accused of corruption in the peace negotiations, fled, and was subsequently captured and executed.

古代ギリシア，アテネの政治家。オリュントスの陥落 (前 348) 後，マケドニアのフィリッポス2世との和議使節団長となり，前 346年マケドニアと講和および同盟を結んだ。さらにフィリッポスの署名を得るために第2次使節団長となり，デモステネスの反対にもかかわらず同盟の履行を提案するために帰還。その後なお2回，フィリッポスのもとに使いした。しかし前 343年平和交渉の際の汚職のかどで告発され，逃亡ののち捕えられて処刑された。
