An old town on the east coast of Amakusa Kamishima Island, Amakusa District, Kumamoto Prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous and there is little arable land, so agriculture and fishing are small-scale businesses. The town prospered through limestone mining and the cement industry, but the factories were relocated during World War II. The town produces Ponkan and Amanatsu mandarins. National Route 266 runs through the town. In March 2004, it merged with Oyano Town, Matsushima Town, and Ryugatake Town in Amakusa District to form Kamiamakusa City. Area: 19.34 km2. Population: 3,662 (2003). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
