Also known as the South African War or the Boer War. A war started in 1899 by Britain with the intention of dominating the Transvaal Republic (now the Transvaal Province) in South Africa, which had been established by the Boers (Afrikaners). The Transvaal allied with the Orange Free State and resisted Britain with a guerrilla war, but surrendered in 1902. Both countries became British colonies, and the era of the partition of Africa came to an end. Prior to this, in 1880-1881, the Transvaal Republic (founded by the Boers in 1852) was annexed by Britain in 1877, and the Boers rose up in armed revolt, regaining their sovereignty, in what is known as the First Boer War. →South Africa→Related topicsWitwatersrand | Orange Free State [Province] | The Guardian | Krüger | Great Trek | Operation Commando | Kornilov | Smuts | Salisbury | Churchill | Fuller | Herzog | Mafeking | Lloyd George Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
