powered lift system

powered lift system

[Types of high-lift devices]
There are two types of high-lift devices currently in use: (1) a type that changes the cross-sectional shape of the wing when activated, which changes the way the air flows over the wing as the aircraft moves forward, increasing lift, and (2) a type that, in addition to (1), uses the wake of the propulsion engine by directing it over the wing and bending it downward, changing the direction of the thrust diagonally upward to generate lift, and also uses the wake to guide the air around the wing to further increase lift. High-lift devices used in general airplanes are type (1), and the thrust-based high-lift device (2) is called a powered lift system and is mainly used in short-takeoff and landing aircraft. The C L max of an ordinary wing is about 1.5, but using type (1) increases it to about 2 to 3.5, and using type (2) increases it to about 4 to 7. …

From [Short Take-off and Landing Aircraft]

…Small, slow-speed aircraft such as light aircraft have small wing loadings and short runways, so by strengthening their high-lift devices, they can become short-field takeoff and landing aircraft. However, medium to large aircraft have to increase their wing loadings or the aircraft will become too large, increasing their weight and reducing performance and economy. Therefore, they are equipped with fairly powerful high-lift devices, and to make them short-field takeoff and landing aircraft, it is necessary to use a powered lift system, which is a high-lift device that uses more powerful thrust. The main powered drift systems that have been used so far are (1) propeller wake deflection, which hits the propeller wake against the flap and bends it downward, (2) EBF (short for externally blown flap), which hits the jet exhaust from the underside of the wing against the flap and bends it, (3) USB (short for upper surface blowing), a type of EBF that uses the phenomenon that when the jet exhaust is blown over the upper surface of the wing, it bends along the flap, and (4) IBF (short for internally blown flap), which guides the jet exhaust into the wing and blows it out diagonally downward from the trailing edge.…
