Akiyoshi Marble

Japanese: 秋吉大理石 - あきよしだいりせき

The name of limestone from the Carboniferous to Permian periods of the Paleozoic era, found in Akiyoshidai, Shuho-cho, Mine-gun, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and in Mine City, Taiyama, across the Koto River. Akiyoshidai produces colored and chintz-patterned limestone (limestone breccia), but due to restrictions on nature conservation in the quasi-national park, production is extremely low. Most of the stone in Taiyama is white to gray crystalline limestone (marble) called "Choshu Kasumi," which has been metamorphosed by the intrusion of granite, and it is currently Japan's largest marble producing area.

山口県美祢（みね）郡秋芳（しゆうほう）町秋吉台，および厚東（ことう）川を隔てて向かい合う美祢市台山に産する，古生代石炭紀から二畳紀にかけての石灰岩の石材名。秋吉台は色物や更紗模様(石灰角レキ岩)のものを産するが，国定公園の自然保護の制約もあって，産額はきわめて少ない。台山の石は，花コウ岩類の貫入によって変成を受けた，〈長州霞〉と呼ばれる白色から灰色の結晶質石灰岩(大理石)が多く，現在では日本最大の大理石産地となっている。
