Isa mine

Japanese: 伊佐鉱山 - いさこうざん

This limestone mine, owned by Ube Industries, is located in Isa-cho, Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is adjacent to Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park, a famous tourist destination. It was developed in August 1946 to supply raw materials to the Ube Cement Factory, and mining began in September 1948. The geology belongs to the Middle Carboniferous to Middle Permian period of the Paleozoic era, and the main component is the fossils of the marine foraminifera Fusulina, known as fusulina limestone. Mining was initially carried out using the slope mining method, but switched to the step mining method around 1968. It is the largest limestone mine in Japan, and supplies raw materials to the neighboring Isa Cement Factory, and also sells the ore to other places.

山口県美祢市伊佐町にある宇部興産の石灰石鉱山。観光地として有名な秋吉台国定公園に隣接している。1946年8月宇部セメント工場に原料を供給する目的で開発され，1948年9月から出鉱している。地質は古生代石炭紀中期ないしペルム紀中期に属し，当時の海生有孔虫フズリナの化石が主体でフズリナ石灰石と称されている。採掘は初めは傾斜面採掘法であったが，1968年頃から階段採掘法に切り替えた。日本最大の石灰石鉱山で，隣接の伊佐セメント工場へ原料として供給し，他所へも売鉱している。
