A deposit formed when a vein of ore and its host rock is broken down by weathering, separated and transported by running water, and useful minerals such as gold, platinum, and tin are concentrated along the course of a river along with gravel, sand, mud, etc. The size and shape of the deposit vary depending on where it is deposited (upstream, midstream, downstream, or on the coast). There are various types of placer deposits, ranging from gold, platinum, and sometimes gemstones such as diamonds to iron sand. Also called alluvial deposits.

鉱脈とその母岩が風化作用により分解され，流水により分級されつつ運搬されたのち，礫，砂，泥などとともに金，白金，スズなどの有用鉱物が濃集して流路に沿い堆積した鉱床をいう。砂鉱床の堆積場所 (上流，中流，下流，海岸) により鉱床の規模，形態は異なる。金，白金，ときにダイヤモンドなどの宝石類から砂鉄にいたるまで各種の砂鉱床がある。漂砂鉱床ともいう。
