House moth - Smerinthus planus

Japanese: ウチスズメ(家天蛾) - ウチスズメ（英語表記）Smerinthus planus

An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Sphingidae. Its wingspan is about 8cm. The hind wings are reddish in color, with a large black pattern with a blue ring inside and a black ring outside of that, forming an eye-like pattern. When insectivorous birds or animals approach, the eye-like pattern is exposed, and it is thought that the larvae vibrate the wings gently to scare off predators and ensure their safety. The larvae, like other hawk moths, have a single tail horn on the back of the eighth abdominal segment. The body is green with eight yellowish-white oblique lines on the sides.

鱗翅目スズメガ科の昆虫。開張8cm内外。後翅は紅色を帯び，大きな黒紋の中に青色環，さらにその外側は黒色環があって，眼状紋となっている。この眼状紋は，食虫性の鳥や獣類が接近したときに露出して，翅を緩やかに振動させることによって害敵を威嚇し，生命の安全を保つのに役だっているものと考えられている。幼虫は他のスズメガと同じように，第8腹節の背上に1本の尾角をもっている。体は緑色，黄白色の斜線が側方に8本ある。
