A musical term. It refers to the repeated slight fluctuations in pitch (as well as dynamics and timbre) in vocal and instrument performance, and to the performance technique. It is commonly used in string instruments to add lustre to the sound. In the case of instruments such as the violin, the general rule is that the higher the range of the instrument, the smaller the vibrato range and the faster it is performed. Therefore, in the case of the violin and viola, it is mainly the wrist and below, while in the case of the cello and double bass, the whole body from the elbow down is vibrated. Also, the general rule is to vibrato quickly and loudly when playing loudly, and slowly and softly when playing softly. In the case of wind instruments, vibrato is generally produced by changing dynamics. It is distinguished from tremolo, which is the rapid repetition of the same pitch. → Vibraphone → Related articles Ondes Martenot | Clavichord | Steel guitar | Violin Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
