Osaga (angry rockfish)

Osaga (angry rockfish)

A marine fish belonging to the order Scorpaeniformes and family Scorpaenidae of the class Osteichthyes. It is found from Sagami Bay to the Kuril Islands and the Emperor Seamounts. Its standard Japanese name is Oosaga, but it is also commonly called Koujinmenuke or Sankomenuke. It can be distinguished from other scorpaenids by its crimson body, the lack of a black spot on one side, the lack of a spine below the eyes, and the lack of a dark band on the back of the head. It lives at depths of 200 to 1,300 meters, migrating to shallower waters around July, but re-entering the depths around October. It is an ovoviviparous fish, giving birth to larvae around May and June. It is the largest of the scorpaenids found in northern Japan, reaching a total length of about 60 cm.

It is caught using longlines and bottom trawls, and is used in dishes such as stews, grilled dishes, and raw fish. It is a high-class fish, and is used in place of red sea bream during the New Year in Hokkaido. In recent years, it has been discovered that the Sankomenuke (also called Sangomenuke, Hikarisaga, and Kinsaga) is the same species as this one.
