When a certain kind of stimulus is applied to the skin, the information is transmitted to the central nervous system through the afferent nerves of the skin, and then causes a reflex change in the activity of the autonomic nerves or hormone-secreting cells that control the internal organs efferently within the central nervous system, resulting in a change in the function of the internal organs. This reaction is called the cutaneous visceral reflex. Below are some examples of this reflex. Strong stimulation of the skin of the abdomen inhibits the movement of the stomach and intestines, and changing the temperature of the abdominal skin changes the blood flow to the stomach and intestines.

皮膚にある種の刺激を加えると，その情報は皮膚の求心性神経を通って中枢神経系に伝わり，さらに中枢神経内で内臓を遠心性に支配する自律神経の活動あるいはホルモン分泌細胞の活動を反射性に変化させ，その結果，内臓の機能が変化する。この反応を皮膚内臓反射と呼ぶ。次にこの反射の実例をいくつか列記する。腹部の皮膚を強く刺激すると胃･腸管の運動が抑制されたり，腹部の皮膚の温度を変えると胃･腸管の血流が変化したりする。
