Skylark - Skylark

Japanese: ヒバリ(雲雀) - ヒバリ
Skylark - Skylark
A species of bird in the family Larkidae (illustration), or a general term for birds in the same family. The skylark Alauda arvensis (English name: skylark) is about 17 cm long. It is yellowish brown overall, with dark vertical stripes on the head, back, and chest, and whitish eyebrows and belly. It is widely distributed in the Palearctic region except for the tundra, and breeds in farmland and grasslands throughout Japan. Many also migrate to Japan from Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands as winter birds. It builds a saucer-shaped nest at the base of grass by laying dead grass and thin roots, and lays 3 to 5 eggs per clutch.
