Woolley, Sir Charles Leonard
Born: April 17, 1880, London
[Died] February 20, 1960, London. British archaeologist. Graduated from New College, Oxford. After working as an assistant at the Ashmolean Museum, he participated in the excavation of Carchemish by the British Museum from 1911 to 1914, directed the joint excavation of Ur by the British Museum and the University of Pennsylvania from 1922 to 1934, and excavated Tell Atchana in Turkey from 1936 to 1949. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Dublin. His books include Ur of the Chaldees (1929), Digging up the Past (30), and A Forgotten Kingdom (53).
