Lovelace - Richard Lovelace

English poet. One of the leading so-called Royalist poets of the 17th century. After graduating from Oxford University, he served at the Royal Court, and was often imprisoned by Parliamentarians during the Puritan Revolution, but he continued to support the King until the end and died in poverty. His collection of lyric poems, "Lycasta" (1649), includes several excellent short poems, and shows how sad emotions are combined with sweet language. "Continued Lycasta" (1659) was published posthumously.

イギリスの詩人。17世紀のいわゆる王党派詩人を代表する一人。オックスフォード大学卒業後宮廷に仕え、ピューリタン革命の期間中は議会派によりしばしば投獄されたが、最後まで国王支持の立場を変えず、窮乏のうちに死んだ。叙情詩集『リュカスタ』（1649）は、幾編かの優れた短詩を含み、哀切な感情を甘美な措辞に盛り込んでみせている。『続リュカスタ』（1659）は没後の出版。
