English poet. One of the leading so-called Royalist poets of the 17th century. After graduating from Oxford University, he served at the Royal Court, and was often imprisoned by Parliamentarians during the Puritan Revolution, but he continued to support the King until the end and died in poverty. His collection of lyric poems, "Lycasta" (1649), includes several excellent short poems, and shows how sad emotions are combined with sweet language. "Continued Lycasta" (1659) was published posthumously. [Kawasaki Toshihiko] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
