Honkawane [town] - Honkawane

Japanese: 本川根[町] - ほんかわね

A former town in Haibara County in central Shizuoka Prefecture. It occupies the upper reaches of the Oi River and is surrounded by the mountains to the south of the Akaishi Mountains. The main settlement is Senzu, which is on the Oigawa Railway. It is known as a producer of Kawane tea and timber, and is home to Sumata Gorge and Sesso Gorge. It is the trailhead for the Southern Alps traverse, and the northern part belongs to the Southern Alps National Park. In September 2005, it merged with Nakakawane Town, Haibara County, to become Kawane Town, Haibara County. Area: 375.35 ^km2 . Population: 3,223 (2003).

静岡県中部，榛原(はいばら)郡の旧町。大井川上流域を占め，赤石山脈南部の山に囲まれる。主集落は大井川鉄道が通じる千頭(せんず)。川根茶，木材の産地として知られ，寸又(すまた)峡，接岨(せっそ)峡がある。南アルプス縦走の登山口で北部は南アルプス国立公園に属する。2005年９月，榛原郡中川根町と合併し町制，榛原郡川根本町となる。375.35km²。3223人（2003）。
