<br /> The remains of a settlement in Uki, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. It is located on a river terrace at the foot of Mt. Yuhiyama, northeast of the left bank of the Uki River, a tributary of the Matsuura River, in the southern part of the Karatsu Plain. Bronze swords, bronze spears, and magatama were excavated from a jar coffin discovered during land reclamation in 1930 ( Showa 5 ), and subsequent investigations revealed that it was a cemetery centered on 129 jar coffin tombs from the middle of the Yayoi period. Many other grave goods were also excavated, including a multi-knobbed mirror with fine patterns, bronze bracelets , and tubular beads. The excavated items were designated an Important Cultural Property in 1960 (Showa 35) as the Uki Excavation Items of Karatsu City, Hizen. A shell mound from the late Jomon period was also discovered at the northern end of the site, and pottery, animal and fish bones, shellfish, and carbonized rice were also excavated. Approximately 17 minutes by car from Onitsuka Station on the JR Chikuhi Line. Source: Kodansha National Historic Site Guide Information |
