[1] [noun] The law of nature. The law of heaven that is not manmade. The law that governs all things. *Shoreishū-ichi (c. 835), a gift from Rikushu-ka, preface: “Though heavenly law is happy, human feelings are not sad.” *Tamekane Waka-shō (c. 1285-87), “Even if one’s temperament is in accordance with heavenly law, is it not a samurai?” [Raku-ki, Rikki] [2] A place name in the central-northern part of Nara Prefecture. It is located in the eastern part of the Nara Basin. It was established in ancient times, and was the territory of the Mononobe clan and the Kakimoto clan. The Kami-kaido road passed through it, and market towns and post towns such as Tambaichi developed. In the Middle Ages, there were many manors of Todaiji Temple and Kofukuji Temple. Tenrikyo was born here at the end of the Edo period, and it became a religious city, and the religious name was adopted as the city name. It is home to the Nishiyama Tomb, Isonokami Shrine , Tenrikyo Headquarters, Tenri University, Tenri Library, etc. It was incorporated as a city in 1954 ( Showa 29 ).

[1] 〘名〙 天然自然の道理。人為でない天の正しい道理。万物を支配している道理。※性霊集‐一(835頃)贈野陸州歌・序「雖云天理合歓然、人情豈无感歎」※為兼和歌抄(1285‐87頃)「天地の心にもかなふべきにこそ気性は天理に合とも侍にや」 〔礼記‐楽記〕[2] 奈良県中北部の地名。奈良盆地の東部にある。上代から開け、物部氏・柿本氏の領地が置かれ、上街道が通じ、丹波市(たんばいち)などの市場町・宿場町が発達。中世は東大寺・興福寺の荘園が多かった。江戸末期にこの地に天理教が生まれ、以後、宗教都市となり、市名にも宗教名が採用された。西山古墳・石上(いそのかみ)神宮・天理教本部・天理大学・天理図書館などがある。昭和二九年(一九五四)市制。
