Ya'qūb Beg

Around 1820-77
Ruler of East Turkestan (Xinjiang). Born in the Khokand Khanate. In early 1865, as an adjutant to Buzurg Khan, a descendant of the Khoja family of Kashgar, he invaded Xinjiang, which was in the midst of a rebellion against the Qing dynasty's rule. He then expelled Buzurg and established an Islamic government centered on refugees from Khokand, and ruled almost all of Xinjiang except the Ili region. He also concluded commercial treaties with Russia and Great Britain, recognized the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire, and sought international recognition, but died in Korla, eastern Xinjiang, probably of a stroke, just before the reconquest army under the command of Qing general Liu Jintang.

東トルキスタン(新疆)の支配者。ホーカンド･ハーン国の生れ。1865年初頭，カシュガル･ホジャ家(ホジャ家)の末裔ブズルグ･ハーンの副官として，清朝支配に対する反乱の渦中にあった新疆に侵入。さらにブズルグを追放して，ホーカンドからの亡命者を主軸とするイスラム教政権を樹立し，イリ(伊犂)地方を除く新疆のほぼ全域を支配した。またロシア，イギリスと通商条約を結び，オスマン帝国の宗主権を認めて，国際的承認を求めたが，清将劉錦棠麾下（きか）の再征服軍を目前にして，新疆東部のコルラで，おそらくは卒中のために死亡。
