A city in the central part of the province of Noord-Brabant in the south of the Netherlands. Population 195,819 (2001). It is located about 10 km north of the Belgian border along the Wilhelmina Canal. Industries such as wool, leather, and textile machinery are thriving here. It has been a market town since ancient times, but after Belgium separated and became independent in 1830, it developed into an industrial center in the south of the Netherlands. The current city hall was the palace of King Willem II in the first half of the 19th century. It is home to the Catholic University of Economics, founded in 1927.
