Submandibular gland

It is one of the three major salivary glands in the oral cavity (parotid, submandibular, sublingual). It is located almost in the center of the lower edge of the lower jaw, and when touched with a finger, it feels like a thumb-sized mound under the skin. It is a slightly flattened oval shape, about 3 cm long and 1.5 cm thick. The submandibular gland is a mixed gland that secretes serous secretions (a watery fluid containing salts, proteins, and enzymes) and mucous secretions (a viscous fluid). The duct of the submandibular gland is about 5 cm long and opens into the sublingual caruncle, a mound at the base of the central fold (lingual frenulum) on the underside of the tongue. The submandibular gland is innervated by both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, but its function is not yet fully understood.

口腔(こうくう)内にある三大唾液腺(だえきせん)（耳下腺、顎下腺、舌下腺）の一つ。下あごの下縁のほぼ中央内側あたりに位置し、指で触れると、皮下に母指頭大の高まりとして感じられる。形はやや扁平(へんぺい)な楕円(だえん)体で、長さ約3センチメートル、厚さ約1.5センチメートル。顎下腺は、漿液性(しょうえきせい)分泌液（塩類、タンパク質、および酵素を含む水分の多い液）と粘液性分泌液（粘性のある液）とを分泌する混合腺である。顎下腺の導管は長さ約5センチメートルで、舌下面中央部のひだ（舌小帯）の根部にある高まりである舌下小丘の部分に開口する。顎下腺は交感神経、副交感神経の二重支配を受けるが、その働きはまだよくわかっていない。
