A fish of the Gobiidae family in the order Perciformes. It is amphibious. It is also called Kanamutsu in Yanagawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and Kachamutsu in Saga. It grows to about 10 cm in length, and its body is blue-gray with a slight reddish tinge, with males showing orange nuptial coloring. Its eyes protrude above its head and can move freely on either side. Compared to the mudskipper, which also crawls on tidal flats, it is more suited to living on land, with its powerful pectoral fins allowing it to crawl not only on the mud of tidal flats but also on rocks and trees. It is found not only in the Ariake Sea and Yatsushiro Sea, but also in various places south of central Honshu. It hibernates in holes in the tidal flats, and spawns in the same holes.
