Born November 17, 1899. Roth, Pansac [Died] January 22, 1952. Paris. French playwright, poet and critic. He started out writing symbolist poetry, then surrealist poetry, but eventually turned to drama and founded the Théâtre Alfred Jarry with A. Artaud (1926). His works, which sharply criticized bourgeois society, became the forerunner of the absurdist theater of E. Ionesco and others. His major works include the poetry collection Déslyre (65) and the play Victor ou les Enfants au pouvoir (28).
