Gokhale - Gokhale

Indian politician. Born in Maharashtra in western India. After graduating from university, he worked with Tilak and others to promote national education, and was also active in the field of social reform. He traveled to England several times since 1897, and was strongly influenced by British liberalism. He joined the Indian National Congress and became its president in 1905, but as a representative of the pro-British moderate group, he came into conflict with Tilak and the nationalist leadership. In the same year, he founded the Indian Servicemen's Association in Poona to guide social and educational activities for young people. In 1910, he became a member of the Central Legislative Council under the Viceroy of India. Influenced by M. G. Ranade and Naoroji, he made many comments about the Indian economy. He supported and advised Gandhi in his struggle in South Africa.

インドの政治家。インド西部マハラシュトラ出身。大学卒業後ティラクらと民族教育の推進に努め、社会改革の分野でも活動。1897年以来何度か渡英し、イギリス自由主義の影響を強く受ける。国民会議派に参加し、1905年に大会議長となるが、親英的穏健派グループを代表し、ティラクら民族派指導部と対立した。同年プーナに、青年の社会・教育活動を指導するため「インド奉仕者協会」を設立。1910年、インド総督下の中央立法参事会メンバーとなった。M・G・ラーナデーやナオロジーらの影響で、インド経済に関する発言も多い。ガンディーの南アフリカでの闘争を支持、助言を与えた。
