Indian politician. Born in Maharashtra in western India. After graduating from university, he worked with Tilak and others to promote national education, and was also active in the field of social reform. He traveled to England several times since 1897, and was strongly influenced by British liberalism. He joined the Indian National Congress and became its president in 1905, but as a representative of the pro-British moderate group, he came into conflict with Tilak and the nationalist leadership. In the same year, he founded the Indian Servicemen's Association in Poona to guide social and educational activities for young people. In 1910, he became a member of the Central Legislative Council under the Viceroy of India. Influenced by M. G. Ranade and Naoroji, he made many comments about the Indian economy. He supported and advised Gandhi in his struggle in South Africa. [Masao Naito] [References] | | | |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
