...What broke this stagnation of lithography was the large-scale color poster prints by Jules Chéret (1836-1931) in the late 1980s. The first color lithography technique was chromolithography, developed in 1836 by Godefroi Engelmann (1788-1839), but this technique involved overprinting the three primary colors, which tended to produce muddy colors and was used primarily by artisans to reproduce paintings. In contrast, Chéret's new color lithography did not require complex shading, but was a simple method of simply arranging colored planes of printing ink, and had the advantage that artists could produce it directly. ...
