A god of oracles who appears in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. According to the Kojiki, when Emperor Yuryaku climbed Mount Katsuragi, a group of people who looked very similar to the emperor's party were about to ascend the mountain. When they asked who it was, they were told it was Katsuragi no Hitokoto-no-nushi, who could pronounce both good and bad events with just one word. The emperor was afraid and offered various items to the god, who gladly accepted them and saw him off to the entrance of the mountain. In addition, when En no Gyoja ordered the demons to build a bridge between Mount Kinpu and Mount Katsuragi, Hitokoto-no-nushi gave an oracle that En no Gyoja was trying to overthrow the imperial court, and Hitokoto-no-nushi was put under a spell by En no Gyoja. This story appears in the Nihon Ryōiki and Konjaku Monogatarishu, and shows the changes in people's awareness of this god. He is enshrined at Hitokoto-no-nushi Shrine in Moriwaki, Gose City, Nara Prefecture. <References> Matsumura Takeo, Studies in Japanese Mythology, Vol. 4; Saigo Nobutsuna, Myths and the Nation (Takashi Sasaki) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc. 『古事記』『日本書紀』などに登場する託宣の神。
