…It includes various tendencies, but can be broadly divided into two: the semi-abstract series influenced by Cubism, and the realistic series. The former was mainly set in New York, and included Joseph Stella, Charles Sheeler, and Davis, who celebrated modern civilization, using the Brooklyn Bridge and high-rise buildings as motifs, while the latter included Reginald Marsh, who captured the everyday scenes of the urban underclass, Hopper, who depicted loneliness and alienation, and Shahn, who adhered to social realism. Regionalism, advocated by Benton, Grant Wood (1892-1942), and John Steuart Curry (1897-1946), who continued to paint the vast rural landscapes of the Midwest, is also representative of the realistic series. …
