1226‐85 Son of King Louis VIII of France. Count of Anjou and Maine. He acquired Provence through marriage and further expanded his power into Piedmont. He was granted the throne of Sicily by the Papacy, which was in conflict with the House of Hohenstaufen (Staufen dynasty) (1259), and went south to Italy, defeating Manfredi, son of Frederick II, at Benevento to gain control of southern Italy (1266). He had ambitions of building a great Mediterranean empire based in Italy and southern France, and together with his brother Louis IX (Saint Louis), he attacked Tunis (1270), conquered Corfu and Durres, and proclaimed himself King of Albania and Jerusalem.
