A general term for the ideology, diplomatic principles, and summit conferences aimed at easing tensions by not joining either the Eastern or Western military blocs, and correcting the disparity between North and South by breaking away from colonialism and dependency on great powers. Non-alignment primarily refers to the ideas of the movement's founders, such as Nehru and Tito. They not only maintained neutrality, but also actively lobbied for mediation and ceasefires with parties in conflict, and for nuclear disarmament negotiations with the United States and the Soviet Union (active neutrality). With the end of the Cold War and the break-up of Yugoslavia, the reason for the existence of non-alignment diminished.
