1892‐1957
Italian labor leader. He started out as a factory worker. In 1913 he became a member of the Central Committee of the Italian Trade Union League, and was active in organizing the labor movement in northern Italy under Mussolini's rule. He participated in the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39 on the side of the Popular Front. Towards the end of World War II he organized partisan units and led the anti-Nazi guerilla war, working to liberate Italy. In the labor movement, he worked to realize a united front between the Communist and Socialist parties, and in 1945 he helped found the General Confederation of Italian Labor (CGIL), of which he became secretary-general (-1957).

イタリアの労働運動指導家。工場労働者出身。1913年イタリア労働組合同盟中央委員となり，その後ムッソリーニ治下の北部イタリアの労働運動の組織化に活躍した。36‐39年のスペイン市民戦争に際しては人民戦線側に立って参加した。第2次大戦末期にはパルチザン部隊を結成して反ナチス･ゲリラ戦を指導，イタリア解放につくした。労働運動においては共産党と社会党の統一戦線の実現に力を注ぎ，45年イタリア労働総同盟(CGIL)創立に尽力しその書記長となる(‐1957)。
