On August 16, 1819, about 60,000 people gathered in St. Peter's Square in Manchester to support the parliamentary reform movement, and the British government used force to suppress them. 11 people were killed and at least 400 were injured, but the Tory government enacted the Six Acts as a more thorough means of suppression. It became known as the Peterloo Massacre, in ironic comparison with the victory at Waterloo four years earlier.
