An old town in Kamiiso District, Hokkaido. It occupies the coast of Hakodate Bay and the mountainous area behind it, and the Esashi Line runs through it. In 1855, the Matsumae Clan's jinya was established in Hekiri-chi. The fertile land has long been a thriving agricultural area, but in recent years it has become a coastal industrial zone, with companies manufacturing cement and refining oil moving in. Tobetsu in the south is home to a male Trappist monastery. In February 2006, it was merged with Ono Town, Kameda District, to become a city, forming Hokuto City. Area: 262.41 km2 . 北海道上磯郡の旧町。函館湾岸と背後の山地を占め,江差線が通じる。1855年戸切地(へきりち)に松前藩の陣屋が置かれた。古くから肥沃な土地として農業が盛んだったが,近年は臨海工業地帯として,セメント製造,石油精製などの企業が進出している。南部の当別には男子トラピスト修道院がある。2006年2月,亀田郡大野町と合併し市制,北斗市となる。262.41km2。3万7286人(2003)。
