1632‐92 Italian violinist and composer. He became a singer and violoncino (an early form of cello) at the Church of San Petronio in his native Bologna, where he studied under the conductor Cazzati. He later served as conductor at the Church of Santissimo Rosario. From 1674 onwards he worked at the royal court of Modena. He was one of the first to incorporate stylised French dances (bourre, minuet, etc.) into chamber sonatas, and contributed particularly to the development of the trio sonata. His Art of Music (1689) is a pedagogical work that shows various experiments in instrumental counterpoint, and is a precursor to J.S. Bach's Musical Offering.
