Hida Province (the northern half of Gifu Prefecture) is a mountainous region, and the nickname comes from the fact that Hida in the early modern period was known as a forest kingdom. In ancient times, Hida was the birthplace of Hida artisans, who were employed mainly in the construction of palaces and official temples and in the collection of timber. The Taiho and Yoro Codes stipulated that Hida Province must provide 10 artisans per village in rotation for one year, and in return be exempt from tax and tribute, but it was not until the end of the Middle Ages that Hida timber began to be transported to the Kinai region and neighboring provinces. In 1586 (Tensho 14), when Kanamori Nagachika was given the entire province of Hida by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and became lord of Takayama Castle, income from gold production exceeded profits from timber. The Edo Shogunate, which had long had its eye on Hida's abundant forest resources, succeeded in making Hida its direct territory in 1692 (Genroku 5) under the 6th Kanamori Yoritoki by a method that was almost like seizing it.
