A state on the Pacific coast of the United States. Abbreviated as Calif. or CA. The Coast Ranges and the Sierra Nevada Mountains run parallel from north to south, with the California Basin between them. The highest peak is Mount Whitney (4,418m). There are lowlands such as Death Valley. The climate is Mediterranean overall, but there is also a desert in the south. Fruit cultivation such as oranges, lemons, and grapes is popular, and wheat, cotton, and vegetables are also produced. The fishing industry is also thriving. It is one of the leading producers of oil and natural gas in the United States. Gold and mercury, which once caused the gold rush, are also produced. After World War II, the development of advanced industries such as aerospace and electronics industries centered around Silicon Valley has been remarkable. There are national parks such as Yosemite and Kings Canyon, and tourism is also important. It was first settled in 1769 and became a Mexican territory, but as a result of the Mexican-American War in 1848, it became a US territory. The population rapidly increased with the gold rush that began in 1848 and the opening of the transcontinental railroad in 1869. It joined the Union in 1850. There are many immigrants, and the number of Japanese people is the second largest after Hawaii. It is home to the University of California, which consists of nine branch campuses.
