Also known as hysteresis. The magnitude of magnetization in ferromagnetic materials, the dielectric constant of dielectric materials, and the strain in elastic materials are not uniquely determined by the values of the magnetic field, electric field, stress, etc. at the time, but are related to the previous state (called magnetic hysteresis, dielectric hysteresis, and elastic hysteresis, respectively). For this reason, if the relationship between the two is illustrated by plotting them on the vertical and horizontal axes, a loop-shaped hysteresis curve will be created, with different paths drawn when the magnetic field, etc. is increased from 0 and when it is then decreased. If a physical property that exhibits hysteresis is changed periodically, an energy loss (hysteresis loss) will occur that is equivalent to the area enclosed by the hysteresis curve.

履歴現象とも。強磁性体の磁化の強さ，誘電体の誘電率，弾性体のひずみなどの大きさが，そのときの磁場，電場，応力などの値によって一義的にきまらず，以前の状態に関係する現象（それぞれ磁気ヒステリシス，誘電ヒステリシス，弾性ヒステリシスなどという）。このため両者を縦横軸にとって関係を図示すると，磁場等を０から増加させたときとその後減少させたときとで異なった経路を描き，ループ型のヒステリシス曲線ができる。ヒステリシスを示す物性を周期的に変化させると，ヒステリシス曲線が囲む面積に相当するエネルギーの損失（ヒステリシス損）が起こる。
