1897‐1973 Brazilian popular musician, composer, flutist and tenor saxophonist. His real name was Alfredo da Rocha Viana. He left an immortal legacy as a performer and composer of choro and samba, two of Brazil's most representative folk music styles. He began playing the flute and choro at the age of 13, and composed samba at the age of 20. In 1919, he formed the eight-piece band Oito Batutas, one of the most famous in the history of Brazilian popular music, and in 1922 he moved to Paris.
