Brazilian popular musician, composer, flutist and tenor saxophonist. His real name was Alfredo da Rocha Viana. He left an immortal legacy as a performer and composer of choro and samba, two of Brazil's most representative folk music styles. He began playing the flute and choro at the age of 13, and composed samba at the age of 20. In 1919, he formed the eight-piece band Oito Batutas, one of the most famous in the history of Brazilian popular music, and in 1922 he moved to Paris.

ブラジルの大衆音楽家，作曲家，フルートおよびテナー･サックス奏者。本名アルフレード･ダ･ローシャ･ビアナAlfredo da Rocha Viana。ブラジルの代表的民衆音楽であるショーロおよびサンバの演奏家，作曲家として不朽の業績を残した。13歳の頃からフルートを吹いてショーロを演奏，20歳の頃からサンバを作曲した。1919年，ブラジル･ポピュラー音楽の史上に名高い8人編成の楽団オイト･バトゥタスOito Batutasを結成，22年にはパリへも渡った。
