A former town in Iwata County facing the Enshu Nada Sea in the southwest of Shizuoka Prefecture. It occupies the lower reaches of the Ota River, and the main settlement at the river's mouth developed as a port town in the early modern period. It is famous for producing becchin (a type of ginger) and corduroy, which account for 90% of the national production, growing greenhouse melons in Toyohama, and fishing for whitebait. In April 2005, it was incorporated into Iwata City along with Tatsuyo Town, Toyoda Town, and Toyooka Village in Iwata County. 16.59 km2 . Population: 19,559 (2003).
