It was Chomsky who claimed that by studying the structure of language (grammar), humans can study the structure of their own brains. Unlike simply describing grammar in an explanatory manner, the goal of generative grammar theory is to find a small number of rules that can generate a huge (theoretically infinite) number of sentences, and then to converge and describe that set of rules into a structure that is as simple and abstract as possible and that can become the basis of all languages. It is believed that the structure ultimately derived, due to its beautiful simplicity and linguistic universality, should correspond to some basic structure at the biological level of the human brain.
