...He began studying the Ainu language while he was a university student, and often made fieldwork in Hokkaido and Sakhalin (Karafuto), or invited Ainu people to his home to record and study their oral literary works, and to conduct linguistic research on the language. In 1932, he received the Imperial Prize from the Imperial Academy for his representative work, "A Study of the Ainu Epic Poem Yukar." He has also written many books and papers on linguistics and Japanese language studies, and after World War II, he contributed to the reform of the Japanese language and Japanese characters. ...
